CHAPTER THIRTEEN

RYAN

“I mean, it could’ve gone worse, I guess,” Amanda’s sarcastic tone was really starting to annoy me. It was a good thing that I was talking to her over the phone, so she couldn’t see me rolling my eyes at her peanut gallery comments. I used to find it sexy, now it just irritated the crap out of me.

“So, I just sit tight and hope for the best?” I asked. I was anxious to get off the phone with this shrew so that I could get back to entertaining Julia.

“I’ll follow up with them soon. I hope that girl played her part,” she said.

“Her name is Julia and she was great. Really great. In fact, we’re going out in public again tonight for a photo op.”

“Great, sell it,” she said.

I hung up the phone and went back to my study, where Julia sat on the sofa, the same spot she sat when she interviewed me. She had kicked off her shoes and propped her feet up, stretching herself out the whole length of my white, plush sofa. She was reading Midnight Train to Wasteland, the script that I had been meaning to finish. I couldn’t help but smile at how intense her face looked as she read. “This is going to be huge for you,” she sat up and her big, brown eyes shined with excitement.

“I’m glad you think so. I had a hard time getting through it, myself,” I admitted.

“What? Are you serious? The writing is amazing, the characters are so complex, and the story is so gripping. How could you not want this part?”

“There’s no action,” I said, “I’m not used to all that dialogue.”

“That’s fair coming from an action star, I supposed,” she said and I swear I detected a hint of sarcasm. “How did you audition for this if you barely read it?”

“Audition? Honey, I haven’t auditioned since I did my last insurance commercial. No, I don’t audition.”

“Are you kidding? They’re throwing jobs at you and you don’t even care. You should be so thankful. I told you how I lost my job, right?”

I suddenly became very ashamed of how nonchalant my attitude towards this role was. I mean, here she is, scraping by on less than what I’m paying her while people give me jobs. Well, they’ve been hesitating to give me jobs and I was starting to see why.

“You’re right,” I said, “I guess I should be a little more thankful. So, all I have to
